Guide for Veterans to Getting a License

Alabama

Alabama Educator License

All veterans, who have at least a Bachelor’s degree and have been discharged honorably, can apply and get Alabama Contractor License based on the TTT project. Troops to Teachers (TTT) programs are designed to help veterans transition from military duty to teaching jobs. TTT members are urged to teach in low-income school districts and to specialize in math, science, special education, and other areas with increasing demand.

Alabama Fishing License

Nearly all veterans who have been discharged honorably are eligible for a complimentary fishing license.

Any U.S. veteran with a 20% or greater disability may obtain an annual saltwater fishing license at a reduced rate under Alabama Code Title 9-11-53.1.

Alabama Driver License

Alabama has special benefits for veterans who apply for a driver’s license. To get an ID of a veteran for a driver’s license, the applicant should provide a DD Form 214 from the Department of Defense. The form must indicate “honorable” or “general” under honorable conditions status.

Alabama Business License

A veteran who is physically incapacitated by 25% or more, whether due to service or not, may be excluded from paying business or occupational license taxes. The exemption also pertains to a veteran who runs a business as a method of generating income through his efforts.

A veteran will not be eligible if his or her real and personal property is valued at $5,000 or more, or if he/she has a net income of $2,500 or more.

Alabama Cannabis and Marijuana license

Veterans in Alabama can get cannabis and marijuana licenses for medical purposes. However, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs, only veterans who participate in a state-approved medical marijuana program will be denied VA benefits. Veteran patients can discuss cannabis use with VA providers. Accordingly, care and treatment plans can be adjusted as needed.

Veterans who have a 10% or higher disability rate do not have to pay for the first number plate registration. They are also exempted from paying certificate tax. Alaska

Alaska Business License

Veterans in Alaska who own a business can get benefits to get an Alaska business license. When applying for an annual business license, the fee will be $25. And for biannual business licenses for veterans, the fee will be $50.

Hunting and Fishing License

Alaska resident veterans with at least a 50% disability and an honorable discharge are eligible for free disabled veteran hunting and sport fishing licenses. Applicants must have lived in Alaska for a minimum of 12 months before submitting their application.

Alaska Driver License

Retired military men or those who have been discharged under honorable conditions will be able to register for a serviceman designation on your authorization and ID card. If you are planning to apply, you should fill out an application form.

Alaska License Plate

Those military men who have at least 50% disability can apply for obtaining one disabled veteran plate. Furthermore, they do not have to pay registration taxes or fees. Arizona

Arizona Driver License

Spouses of veterans are eligible for lower licensure requirements from the Arizona Department of Real Estate. In some cases, there are fee waivers possible for an initial license.

Arizona Special Military Exemption

The Special Military Exemption allows military personnel to be exempted from vehicle certificate tax and registration fees for one year. This applies to a maximum of two vehicles. In this state, Veteran License Plate costs $25. However, $17 of the payment goes to Arizona Veterans Donation Fund. The letter helps servicemen to take care of their well-being, invest in their education, and so on. According to the law, Arizona Veterans Donation Fund applies only to Arizona’s veteran agendas.

Arkansas

Arkansas Business License

Veterans who sell, trade, or distribute any items, including sales from a fixed location, are free from paying Arkansas business license fees.

Arkansas Driving License

When getting a driver’s license, veterans may have up to a full discount on the initial licensing (renewals are not included). License plate fees for disabled veterans are also waived, and they have a “VETERAN” writing printed on them. This law only applies to one vehicle.

Arkansas License Plates

Veterans with impairments might be eligible to obtain Arkansas Disabled Veteran License Plate. The first plaque is free. However, if you want to get an additional one you must pay $3.89. Delaware

Delaware Business License

Delaware veterans who own a business that is the main income of their living may apply for a Delaware Business license fee discount and, in some cases, for a waiver. However, it doesn’t pertain to renewals or any other activities besides the initial licensure.

Delaware Driver’s License

Delaware veterans can apply for a driver’s license cost reduction or waiver by presenting the necessary documentation. They are also eligible for VETERAN-designated specialty license plates.

Delaware Hunting, Trapping, Fishing License

Hunting, trapping, and fishing permits are free of charge for military personnel with disabilities. According to Delaware Code 7-5-I-502, any honorably discharged who has at least 60% service-connected disability from the VA, may register for licensure without any requirements. Florida

Florida Business License

Florida veterans who already own a business that is their primary source of income may be eligible for a Florida business license fee reduction and, in some situations, a waiver. It does not, however, apply to renewals or any other activities other than initial licensure.

By producing the required documentation, Florida veterans can apply for a driver’s license cost reduction or waiver. They can also get VETERAN-designated specialty license plates. A fee waiver or discount is applicable only for the initial permit.

According to Florida Statutes, section 320.084, veterans with 100% disability can obtain a “DV” license plate without any charges.

Georgia

Georgia Business License

Georgia’s local authorities have established one-of-a-kind benefits for their veterans. When establishing a business, veterans may be eligible for a Business license fee waiver and discount based on the status of the veteran’s income. It is, however, only available for the initial licensing.

Georgia Driver License

Veterans in Georgia can seek a special distinction on their driver’s license and license plates. The word “VETERAN” is stamped on the decals, and the licensure price is waived for honorably discharged veterans.

Georgia License Plate

Georgia License Plate is available for Georgia veterans who were discharged with honorable conditions. This also refers to un-remarried, surviving spouses of veterans who passed away. In addition, eligible veterans are exempted from registration, manufacturing, and annual fees when applying for one plate. If you want to get the second one, you should pay a $25 manufacturing fee along with an annual fee.

Hawaii

Hawaii Hunting & Fishing License

Hawaii honorably discharged veterans and their immediate family members that live in Hawaii. Accordingly, they are entitled to use the discount or entire fee waiver to purchase a hunting license.

Hawaii Driver License

In the state of Hawaii, there is a “Veteran” designation for driver permits. Eligible Hawaii veterans and disabled veterans can apply for this classification. In order to apply, you should provide a complete application form.

Idaho

Idaho Hunting & Fishing Licenses

Residents who are disabled veterans may be eligible for a reduced-fee license. Nonresident disabled veterans having a VA disability of at least 40% are eligible for a nonresident license fee waiver or discount.

Idaho Driver License

Here, servicemen have the right to apply for a military designation. It is significant to note that the renewal process is free of charge.

Idaho License Plate

Veterans who have permanent disabilities caused by their military service can apply for an Idaho license plate. The plate is available without any fees and taxes. To obtain the plate make sure to request a Disabled Veteran Plate Eligibility Letter. The last-mentioned is provided by the Veterans Administration Regional Office.

Illinois

Illinois Driver License

Veterans who have served with distinction in the armed services may be eligible for a Veteran Identifier on their Illinois driver’s license or identification card. They must have served in active duty for at least 90 days.

Illinois License Plates

With some distinct license plate designs, Illinois recognizes the service and sacrifice of Veterans and their immediate family members. They may have the word “VETERAN” printed on the license plate, as well as a driver’s license fee waiver.

Illinois Fishing and Hunting License

Indiana

Indiana Hunting And Fishing License

Any Indiana resident who has served in the army was disabled and honorably discharged by the VA can get a reduced-fee Indiana hunting and fishing license.

Iowa

Iowa Hunting and Fishing License

For a $7.00 fee, veterans with service-connected disabilities can obtain a lifelong hunting or fishing license. To be eligible, an Iowa citizen must have served on active federal duty and been disabled as a result of that service.

Iowa Driver’s License

Iowa veterans who wish to obtain a driver’s license may apply and receive a free Iowa driver’s license. Veterans who have been honorably discharged (as defined in Iowa Code 35.1) are eligible to purchase customized veteran license plates for their vehicles.

In Iowa, veterans with disabilities are entitled to obtain one Disabled Veteran license plate without any payment. However, note that it is mandatory for the vehicle to be provided by the Veterans Administration. To get a free DV plate, the candidates must provide a qualification from the VA to the county treasurer’s office.

Kansas

Kansas Hunting & Fishing License

Kansas provides free hunting and fishing licenses to honorably discharged resident Veterans with a service-connected disability of 30% or greater.

Kansas Driver’s License

Kansas resident veterans are eligible to get a free Kansas driver’s license after being honorably discharged from their active duty.

Kansas License Plate

Impaired veterans living in Kansas are not obliged to pay a registration fee for the initial plate. On the other hand, it is mandatory to pay a property tax for the vehicle.

Kentucky

Kentucky Hunting & Fishing License

Honorably discharged resident veterans with a disability of 30% or more in Kentucky are eligible for complimentary hunting and fishing licenses.

Kentucky Driver’s License

After being honorably released from active duty, Kansas resident veterans are eligible for a free Kansas driver’s license.

Kentucky License Plate

Veterans with impairments can obtain one Disabled Veteran license plate without any payment due. The applicants can be considered qualified if they have a service-related disability of 50% or more. Moreover, the complete application form should be submitted to the local County Clerk’s Office.

Louisiana

Louisiana Hunting & Fishing License

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries offers significantly reduced license costs to qualified veterans and active-duty military personnel. This program also includes fee-free licenses, except Federal Duck Stamps, for qualified handicapped veterans with 50% or more VA-rated impairments.

Louisiana Driver License

Impaired veterans are exempted from driver’s license payments. These include Classes E and D, and also CDL. In order to obtain a free license, the candidates must have an honorable discharge and have a service-related disability of 50% or more.

Louisiana License Plate

Disabled veterans are allowed to obtain a free Disabled Veteran license plate. The last-mentioned is free of charge for the lifetime. However, there is an $8 handling fee except for renewals.

Maine

Maine Driver License

Veterans from Maryland who have served in active duty for at least 3 months and have been honorably discharged may be eligible for a Maryland Driver’s License Fee waiver or reduction.

Maryland Fishing License

In Maryland, veterans may be eligible for a free lifetime fishing license. To be eligible, the Veteran must be a Maryland resident, have obtained an honorable discharge, and have been certified by state officials as having a 50% disability.

Maryland License Plate

All 100% disabled military personnel can receive free registration for all types of license plates.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts Driver License

To honorably discharged resident Veterans, Massachusetts provides a “Veteran” designation printed on driver’s licenses, learner’s permits, MA Veterans Designation licenses, and ID cards. There is no additional charge for this service, but usually costs for all cards apply, and the designation cannot be added online. It must be done in person.

Michigan

Michigan Hunting & Fishing License

Veterans who are permanently and fully disabled are eligible for a free resident hunting or fishing license.

Michigan Driver’s License

Michigan residents are eligible for a driver’s license fee waiver when providing the proof documents of being honorably discharged. Veterans, when registering the car, get special license plates with “VETERAN” printed on them.

Michigan License Plate

Those veterans who are 100% permanently impaired can apply to register one vehicle with a Veteran plate for free.

Minnesota

Minnesota Driver’s License

Residents of Minnesota are eligible for a driver’s license fee waiver if they provide documentation of honorably discharged service. Veterans who register their vehicles receive special license plates with the word “VETERAN” written on them.

Mississippi

Mississippi Hunting and Fishing Licenses

Veterans with a total service-connected disability from the VA are exempt from purchasing a hunting or fishing license, but they must show proof of age, domicile, and disability status while hunting or fishing.

Mississippi Driver’s License

Mississippi’s local authorities have designed special designation for veterans to get a Mississippi driver’s license. They also have the right to get specialty license plates for their vehicle. The vehicle registration and license plate fee waiver are applicable only for one vehicle owned by the veteran.

Mississippi License Plate

The Mississippi Disabled American Veteran license plates are available for residents that have 100% permanent impairment. The fee for this type of license is $1. Note that all other property taxes are waived for this permit.

Missouri

Missouri Driver’s License

Missouri provides veteran-designated driver’s licenses, license plates, and other services. These services require fees and proof of service at the Missouri DMV.

Missouri License Plate

Those honorably discharged servicemen who have a service-related impairment can obtain one set of Missouri Disabled Veteran license plates for free. In order to prove that their impairment is a result of the defense service, they should submit a letter from the VA dated within half a year.

Nevada

Nevada Hunting & Fishing License

Veterans who have been honorably retired and have a disability rating of 50% or higher are eligible for discounted hunting and fishing licenses. Nevada resident servicemen stationed outside of Nevada and home on leave are eligible for a subsidized hunting and fishing combination license.

Nevada License Plate

The Nevada Disabled Veteran license plate is accessible for those veterans who were subjected to impairment because of their military service. The annual fee is $7. However, the good part is that there are no annual renewal fees and local park payments.

New Hampshire

New Mexico

New Mexico Hunting and Fishing License

A fishing and hunting license is available for $10 to any New Mexico resident veteran with a service-connected disability.

New Mexico Driver License

Veterans in New Mexico may request a special designation on their driver’s license. The price for licensure may also be waived or reduced based on the veteran’s health status.

New Mexico License Plate

Those veterans who have 50% or more impairment connected with their military service can obtain free New Mexico Disabled Veteran license plates for a maximum of two vehicles. It is also available for motorcycles.

New York

New York Hunting & Fishing License

Veterans, who live in New York and have a disability rating of 40% or higher, are eligible for low-cost hunting and fishing licenses.

New York Driver License

Veterans who have served honorably in the military may be eligible for a Veteran Identifier on their driver’s license in New York. They must have served for at least three months on active duty.

New York License Plate

According to the New York State DMV, veterans can get an exemption from vehicle plate fees if they are qualified disabled veterans under Federal Title 38, Part III, Chapter 39. Other cases include instances when the person is:

  • Qualified for Congressional Medal of Honor custom plates, or
  • Qualified for the Former Prisoner of War custom plates

North Carolina

North Carolina Hunting & Fishing License

All disabled veterans living in North Carolina, who are 50% or more disabled, can purchase a lifetime hunting-fishing license. The fee would vary from $10 to $110 based on the license types.

North Carolina License Plate

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles provides various license plates. The list also includes plates for disabled veterans. This type of permit is available for those who have a 100% impairment. That military personnel who qualify for this plate can obtain it without making any payments.

Ohio

Ohio Business License

Oregon

Oregon Business License

Rhode Island

Rhode Island Hunting & Fishing License

Rhode Island Real Estate License

The Rhode Island Department of Real Estate allows spouses of veterans to have reduced licensure restrictions. Fee waivers for initial licenses are allowed in some instances.

South Carolina

South Carolina Hunting & Fishing License

Residents of South Carolina who are totally disabled can acquire a free hunting and fishing license for the rest of their lives.

South Carolina Cannabis and Marijuana License

South Carolina provides particular benefits to veterans in need of medical cannabis and marijuana. While cannabis and marijuana are not authorized in VA facilities, honorably discharged veterans may qualify for a state permit to use cannabinoids for medical purposes.

Veterans who are Utah residents and have been honorably retired from the active military may be eligible for a Utah Business License fee waiver when starting a business. License renewals and other operations are exempt from the regulation.

Utah Hunting And Fishing License

Any Utah citizen, who served in the army, got disabled, and was honorably released by the VA, is eligible for a reduced-fee Indiana hunting and fishing license.

Vermont

Vermont Hunting & Fishing License

Veterans in Vermont who have a VA Service-Connected Disability may be eligible for a free lifetime hunting and fishing license. To qualify for it, they must have at least 60% of disability.

Vermont Driver License

Virginia Fishing License

Veterans in Virginia may be eligible for a free lifetime fishing license. To be eligible, the veteran must be a Virginia resident, have received an honorable discharge, and have been verified as having a 50% disability by state officials.

Washington

Washington Business License

Local governments in Washington have enacted unique benefits for veterans. Veterans can qualify for a Business License Fee Waiver when starting a business. However, it’s only applicable for the initial licensing.

Washington Driver License

In the state of Washington, veterans can request special designation on their driver’s license and license plates. The state marks “VETERAN” on the decals and waives the price for honorably discharged veterans.

Washington Hunting & Fishing Licenses

Veterans that have at least 30% disability can apply for free hunting and fishing licenses. This refers to both resident and non-resident veterans.

Washington License Plate

Those veterans who have 100% impairment for one year or more are eligible for a free disabled veteran vehicle license plate.

West Virginia

West Virginia Business License

West Virginia governing bodies have adopted special benefits for veterans. When opening a business, veterans can apply for a Business License Fee Waiver. This program waives both the initial charge to register your business and the fee to file your yearly reports with the Secretary of State’s office for the first four years.

West Virginia Driver License

Veterans can apply for special designation on their driver’s license and their license plates. The state prints “VETERAN” on the decals and offers fee waivers for honorably discharged veterans.

West Virginia Cannabis and Marijuana License

West Virginia has special benefits for veterans who need medical cannabis and marijuana. While not allowed in the VA facilities, honorably discharged veterans can apply for a state-level license to use cannabis and marijuana for medical purposes.

West Virginia License Plate

Wisconsin

When issuing initial licenses, Wisconsin veterans are granted fee waivers. Only one initial licensing cost waiver is available per applicant under this program. Waivers are not valid for license renewals. Please note that they are only valid for the first license.

Wisconsin Driver License

Veterans who have served in the military and have been honorably discharged may be eligible for a Veteran Identifier on their Wisconsin driver’s license or identification card. They must have served at least 90 days on active duty.

Wisconsin License Plates

Wisconsin honors the service and sacrifice of Veterans and immediate family members with nine unique license plate designs. You may have “VETERAN” printed on the license plate as well as a fee waiver.

Wisconsin Fishing and Hunting License

Any resident on active service in the United States Armed Forces who provide leave papers can get a free small game and fishing license (state stamps included). There may be some specific requirements adopted at the county level.

Wyoming

Wyoming Driver’s License

On Wyoming driving licenses and ID cards, honorably discharged veterans can obtain a ‘Veteran’ label. Wyoming Fishing License

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will provide Veterans with a free lifetime fishing license. To be eligible, a veteran must be a Wyoming resident, have an honorable discharge, and be verified by the VA as having a 50% disability. This license is valid for as long as the veteran resides in Wyoming.

Wyoming License Plate

Disabled resident veterans who have at least 50% impairment due to their military activities and acquire compensation from the VA can apply for the Wyoming Disabled Veteran license plate. The latter is free of fees and registration charges.
